Make `date_range` query rounding consistent with `date` (#50237)
Currently the rounding used in range queries can behave differently for `date`
and `date_range` as explained in #50009. The behaviour on `date` fields is
the one we document in https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/query-dsl-range-query.html#range-query-date-math-rounding.
This change adapts the rounding behaviour for RangeType.DATE so it uses the
same logic as the `date` for the `date_range` type.

Remove the 'local' parameter of /_cat/nodes (#50594)
The cat nodes API performs a `ClusterStateAction` then a `NodesInfoAction`.
Today it accepts the `?local` parameter and passes this to the
`ClusterStateAction` but this parameter has no effect on the `NodesInfoAction`.
This is surprising, because `GET _cat/nodes?local` looks like it might be a
completely local call but in fact it still depends on every node in the
cluster.

This parameter was deprecated in 7.x in #50499 and this commit removes it.

Reject misconfigured/ambiguous SSL server config (#45892)
This commit makes it an error to start a node where either of the
server contexts (xpack.security.transport.ssl and
xpack.security.http.ssl) meet either of these conditions:

1. The server lacks a certificate/key pair (i.e. neither
   ssl.keystore.path not ssl.certificate are configured)
2. The server has some ssl configuration, but ssl.enabled is not
specified. This new validation does not care whether ssl.enabled is
true or false (though other validation might), it simply makes it
an error to configure server SSL without being explicit about
   whether to enable that configuration.

Decouple shard allocation awareness from search and get requests (#45735)
With this commit, Elasticsearch will no longer prefer using shards in the same location
(with the same awareness attribute values) to process `_search` and `_get` requests.
Instead, adaptive replica selection (the default since 7.0) should route requests more efficiently
using the service time of prior inter-node communications. Clusters with big latencies between
nodes should switch to cross cluster replication to isolate nodes within the same zone.
Note that this change only targets 8.0 since it is considered as breaking. However a follow up
pr should add an option to activate this behavior in 7.x in order to allow users to opt-in early.

Force Merge should reject requests with `only_expunge_deletes` and `max_num_segments` set (#44761)
This commit changes the ForceMergeRequest.validate() method so that it does
not accept the parameters only_expunge_deletes and max_num_segments
to be set at the same time.

The motivation is that InternalEngine.forceMerge() just ignores the max. number
of segments parameter when the only expunge parameter is set to true, leaving
the wrong impression to the user that max. number of segments has been applied.
It also changes InternalEngine.forceMerge() so that it now throws an exception
when both parameters are set, and modifies tests where needed.

Because it changes the behavior of the REST API I marked this as >breaking.

Fail node containing ancient closed index (#44264)
Today we fail the node at startup if it contains an index that is too old to be
compatible with the current version, unless that index is closed. If the index
is closed then the node will start up and this puts us into a bad state: the
index cannot be opened and must be reindexed using an earlier version, but we
offer no way to get that index into a node running an earlier version so that
it can be reindexed. Downgrading the node in-place is decidedly unsupported and
cannot be expected to work since the node already started up and upgraded the
rest of its metadata. Since #41731 we actively reject downgrades to versions ≥
v7.2.0 too.

This commit prevents the node from starting in the presence of any too-old
indices (closed or not). In particular, it does not write any upgraded metadata
in this situation, increasing the chances an in-place downgrade might be
successful. We still actively reject the downgrade using #41731, because we
wrote the node metadata file before checking the index metadata, but at least
there is a way to override this check.

Remove "nodes/0" folder prefix from data path (#42489)
With the removal of node.max_local_storage_nodes, there is no need anymore to keep the data in
subfolders indexed by a node ordinal. This commit makes it so that ES 8.0 will store data directly in
$DATA_DIR instead of $DATA_DIR/nodes/$nodeOrdinal.

Upon startup, Elasticsearch will check to see if there is data in the old location, and automatically
move it to the new location. This automatic migration only works if $nodeOrdinal is 0, i.e., multiple
node instances have not previously run on the same data path, which required for
node.max_local_storage_nodes to explicitly be configured.

Make Fuzziness reject illegal values earlier (#33511)
The current java implementation of Fuzziness leaves a lot of room for
initializing it with illegal values that either cause errors later when the
queries reach the shards where they are executed or values that are silently
ignored in favour of defaults. We should instead tighten the java implementation
of the class so that we only accept supported values. Currently those are
numeric values representing the edit distances 0, 1 and 2, optionally also as
float or string, and the "AUTO" fuzziness, which can come in a cusomizable
variant that allows specifying two value that define the positions in a term
where the AUTO option increases the allowed edit distance.

This change removes several redundant ways of object construction and adds input
validation to the remaining ones. Java users should either use one of the
predefined constants or use the static factory methods `fromEdits(int)` or
`fromString(String)` to create instances of the class, while other ctors are
hidden. This allows for instance control, e.g. returning one of the constants
when creating instances from an integer value.

Previously the class would accept any positive integer value and any float
value, while in effect the maximum allowed edit distance was capped at 2 in
practice. These values while throw an error now, as will any other String value
other than "AUTO" that where previously accepted but led to numeric exceptions
when the query was executed.

Remove support for maxRetryTimeout from low-level REST client (#38085)
We have had various reports of problems caused by the maxRetryTimeout
setting in the low-level REST client. Such setting was initially added
in the attempts to not have requests go through retries if the request
already took longer than the provided timeout.

The implementation was problematic though as such timeout would also
expire in the first request attempt (see #31834), would leave the
request executing after expiration causing memory leaks (see #33342),
and would not take into account the http client internal queuing (see #25951).

Given all these issues, it seems that this custom timeout mechanism
gives little benefits while causing a lot of harm. We should rather rely
on connect and socket timeout exposed by the underlying http client
and accept that a request can overall take longer than the configured
timeout, which is the case even with a single retry anyways.

This commit removes the `maxRetryTimeout` setting and all of its usages.

Remove support for internal versioning for concurrency control (#38254)
Elasticsearch has long [supported](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/docs-index_.html#index-versioning) compare and set (a.k.a optimistic concurrency control) operations using internal document versioning. Sadly that approach is flawed and can sometime do the wrong thing. Here's the relevant excerpt from the resiliency status page:

> When a primary has been partitioned away from the cluster there is a short period of time until it detects this. During that time it will continue indexing writes locally, thereby updating document versions. When it tries to replicate the operation, however, it will discover that it is partitioned away. It won’t acknowledge the write and will wait until the partition is resolved to negotiate with the master on how to proceed. The master will decide to either fail any replicas which failed to index the operations on the primary or tell the primary that it has to step down because a new primary has been chosen in the meantime. Since the old primary has already written documents, clients may already have read from the old primary before it shuts itself down. The version numbers of these reads may not be unique if the new primary has already accepted writes for the same document

We recently [introduced](https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/6.x/optimistic-concurrency-control.html) a new sequence number based approach that doesn't suffer from this dirty reads problem.

This commit removes support for internal versioning as a concurrency control mechanism in favor of the sequence number approach.

With this change we no longer support pluggable discovery implementations. No
known implementations of `DiscoveryPlugin` actually override this method, so in
practice this should have no effect on the wider world. However, we were using

as is the case for any other index privilege.

Elasticsearch support to JSON logging (#36833)
In order to support JSON log format, a custom pattern layout was used and its configuration is enclosed in ESJsonLayout. Users are free to use their own patterns, but if smooth Beats integration is needed, they should use ESJsonLayout. EvilLoggerTests are left intact to make sure user's custom log patterns work fine.

To populate additional fields node.id and cluster.uuid which are not available at start time,
a cluster state update will have to be received and the values passed to log4j pattern converter.
A ClusterStateObserver.Listener is used to receive only one ClusteStateUpdate. Once update is received the nodeId and clusterUUid are set in a static field in a NodeAndClusterIdConverter.

Following fields are expected in JSON log lines: type, tiemstamp, level, component, cluster.name, node.name, node.id, cluster.uuid, message, stacktrace
see ESJsonLayout.java for more details and field descriptions

Docker log4j2 configuration is now almost the same as the one use for ES binary.
The only difference is that docker is using console appenders, whereas ES is using file appenders.

Track total hits up to 10,000 by default (#37466)
This commit changes the default for the `track_total_hits` option of the search request
to `10,000`. This means that by default search requests will accurately track the total hit count
up to `10,000` documents, requests that match more than this value will set the `"total.relation"`
to `"gte"` (e.g. greater than or equals) and the `"total.value"` to `10,000` in the search response.
Scroll queries are not impacted, they will continue to count the total hits accurately.
The default is set back to `true` (accurate hit count) if `rest_total_hits_as_int` is set in the search request.
I choose `10,000` as the default because that's also the number we use to limit pagination. This means that users will be able to know how far they can jump (up to 10,000) even if the total number of hits is not accurate.

Remove index audit output type (#37707)
This commit removes the Index Audit Output type, following its deprecation
in 6.7 by 8765a31d4e. It also adds the migration notice (settings notice).

In general, the problem with the index audit output is that event indexing
can be slower than the rate with which audit events are generated,
especially during the daily rollovers or the rolling cluster upgrades.
In this situation audit events will be lost which is a terrible failure situation
for an audit system.
Besides of the settings under the `xpack.security.audit.index` namespace, the
`xpack.security.audit.outputs` setting has also been deprecated and will be
removed in 7. Although explicitly configuring the logfile output does not touch
any deprecation bits, this setting is made redundant in 7 so this PR deprecates
it as well.

This commit gets rid of the 'NONE' and 'INFO' severity levels for

'NONE' is unused and does not make much sense as a severity level.
'INFO' can be separated into two categories: Either 1) we can
definitively tell there will be a problem with the cluster/node/index
configuration that can be resolved prior to upgrade, in which case
the issue should be a WARNING, or 2) we can't, because any issues would
be at the application level, for which the user should review the
deprecation logs and/or response headers.

Make hits.total an object in the search response (#35849)
This commit changes the format of the `hits.total` in the search response to be an object with
a `value` and a `relation`. The `value` indicates the number of hits that match the query and the
`relation` indicates whether the number is accurate (in which case the relation is equals to `eq`)
or a lower bound of the total (in which case it is equals to `gte`).
This change also adds a parameter called `rest_total_hits_as_int` that can be used in the
search APIs to opt out from this change (retrieve the total hits as a number in the rest response).
Note that currently all search responses are accurate (`track_total_hits: true`) or they don't contain
`hits.total` (`track_total_hits: true`). We'll add a way to get a lower bound of the total hits in a
follow up (to allow numbers to be passed to `track_total_hits`).

Remove the distinction between query and filter context in QueryBuilders (#35354)
When building a query Lucene distinguishes two cases, queries that require to produce a score and queries that only need to match. We cloned this mechanism in the QueryBuilders in order to be able to produce different queries based on whether they need to produce a score or not. However the only case in es that require this distinction is the BoolQueryBuilder that sets a different minimum_should_match when a `bool` query is built in a filter context..
This behavior doesn't seem right because it makes the matching of `should` clauses different when the score is not required.

Include realm type in Security Realm setting keys (#30241)
This moves all Realm settings to an Affix definition.
However, because different realm types define different settings
(potentially conflicting settings) this requires that the realm type
become part of the setting key.

Thus, we now need to define realm settings as:

    xpack.security.authc.realms:
      file.file1:
        order: 0

      native.native1:
        order: 1

- This is a breaking change to realm config
- This is also a breaking change to custom security realms (SecurityExtension)

Add cluster-wide shard limit warnings (#34021)
In a future major version, we will be introducing a soft limit on the
number of shards in a cluster based on the number of nodes in the
cluster. This limit will be configurable, and checked on operations
which create or open shards and issue a warning if the operation would
take the cluster over the limit.

There is an option to enable strict enforcement of the limit, which
turns the warnings into errors. In a future release, the option will be
removed and strict enforcement will be the default (and only) behavior.

Fix threshold frequency computation in Suggesters (#34312)
The `term` and `phrase` suggesters have different options to filter candidates
based on their frequencies. The `popular` mode for instance filters candidate
terms that occur in less docs than the original term. However when we compute this threshold
we use the total term frequency of a term instead of the document frequency. This is not inline
with the actual filtering which is always based on the document frequency. This change fixes
this discrepancy and clarifies the meaning of the different frequencies in use in the suggesters.
It also ensures that the threshold doesn't overflow the maximum allowed value (Integer.MAX_VALUE).

Disallow negative query boost (#34486)
This change disallows negative query boosts. Negative scores are not allowed in Lucene 8 so
it is easier to just disallow negative boosts entirely. We should also deprecate negative boosts

Core: Default node.name to the hostname (#33677)
Changes the default of the `node.name` setting to the hostname of the
machine on which Elasticsearch is running. Previously it was the first 8
characters of the node id. This had the advantage of producing a unique
name even when the node name isn't configured but the disadvantage of
being unrecognizable and not being available until fairly late in the
startup process. Of particular interest is that it isn't available until
after logging is configured. This forces us to use a volatile read
whenever we add the node name to the log.

Using the hostname is available immediately on startup and is generally
recognizable but has the disadvantage of not being unique when run on
machines that don't set their hostname or when multiple elasticsearch
processes are run on the same host. I believe that, taken together, it
is better to default to the hostname.

1. Running multiple copies of Elasticsearch on the same node is a fairly
advanced feature. We do it all the as part of the elasticsearch build
for testing but we make sure to set the node name then.
2. That the node.name defaults to some flavor of "localhost" on an
unconfigured box feels like it isn't going to come up too much in
production. I expect most production deployments to at least set the
hostname.

As a bonus, production deployments need no longer set the node name in
most cases. At least in my experience most folks set it to the hostname
anyway.

Set maxScore for empty TopDocs to Nan rather than 0 (#32938)
We used to set `maxScore` to `0` within `TopDocs` in situations where there is really no score as the size was set to `0` and scores were not even tracked. In such scenarios, `Float.Nan` is more appropriate, which gets converted to `max_score: null` on the REST layer. That's also more consistent with lucene which set `maxScore` to `Float.Nan` when merging empty `TopDocs` (see `TopDocs#merge`).
