Richard Levitte d5f9166bac Move e_os.h to include/internal
Including e_os.h with a path from a header file doesn't work well on
certain exotic platform.  It simply fails to build.

Since we don't seem to be able to stop ourselves, the better move is
to move e_os.h to an include directory that's part of the inclusion
path given to the compiler.

Phus Lu 13a53fbf13 add SSL_get0_iana_groups() & SSL_client_hello_get_extension_order()
The function/macro allow user get groups/extensions without memory allcations.
So we could calculate the ssl fignerprint(ja3) in low cost.

Matt Caswell 07f620e3ac Reset the rwstate before calling ASYNC_start_job()
If an async job pauses while processing a TLS connection then the
rwstate gets set to SSL_ASYNC_PAUSED. When resuming the job we should
reset the rwstate back to SSL_NOTHING. In fact we can do this
unconditionally since if we're about to call ASYNC_start_job() then either
we are about to start the async job for the first time (in which case the
rwstate should already by SSL_NOTHING), or we are restarting it after a
pause (in which case reseting it to SSL_NOTHING is the correct action).

Matt Caswell ca00152497 Fix some minor record layer issues

Matt Caswell 3bec485153 Disallow SSL_key_update() if there are writes pending
If an application is halfway through writing application data it should
not be allowed to attempt an SSL_key_update() operation. Instead the
SSL_write() operation should be completed.

Benjamin Kaduk 7c73fefe38 Let SSL_new_session_ticket() enter init immediately
The initial implementation always deferred the generation of the
requested ticket(s) until the next application write, but this
is not a great fit for what it actually does, architecturally wise.
A request to send a session ticket means entering back into the
handshake state machine (or "in init", as it's known in the
implementation).  The state machine transition is not something that
only occurs at an application-data write, and in general could occur at
any time.  The only constraint is that we can't enter "init" while in
the middle of writing application data.  In such cases we will need to
wait until the next TLS record boundary to enter the state machine,
as is currently done.

However, there is no reason why we cannot enter the handshake state
machine immediately in SSL_new_session_ticket() if there are no
application writes pending.  Doing so provides a cleaner API surface to
the application, as then calling SSL_do_handshake() suffices to drive
the actual ticket generation.  In the previous state of affairs a dummy
zero-length SSL_write() would be needed to trigger the ticket
generation, which is a logical mismatch in the type of operation being
performed.

This commit should only change whether SSL_do_handshake() vs zero-length
SSL_write() is needed to immediately generate a ticket after the
SSL_new_session_ticket() call -- the default behavior is still to defer
the actual write until there is other application data to write, unless
the application requests otherwise.

Rich Salz 55373bfd41 Add SSL_OP_ALLOW_CLIENT_RENEGOTIATION
Add -client_renegotiation flag support.  The -client_renegotiation flag is
equivalent to SSL_OP_ALLOW_CLIENT_RENEGOTIATION. Add support to the app,
the config code, and the documentation.

Add SSL_OP_ALLOW_CLIENT_RENEGOTIATION to the SSL tests. We don't need to
always enable it, but there are so many tests so this is the easiest thing
to do.

Add a test where client tries to renegotiate and it fails as expected. Add
a test where server tries to renegotiate and it succeeds. The second test
is supported by a new flag, -immediate_renegotiation, which is ignored on
the client.

Benjamin Kaduk 72d2670bd2 Enforce secure renegotiation support by default
Previously we would set SSL_OP_LEGACY_SERVER_CONNECT by default in
SSL_CTX_new(), to allow connections to legacy servers that did not
implement RFC 5746.

It has been more than a decade since RFC 5746 was published, so
there has been plenty of time for implmentation support to roll out.

Change the default behavior to be to require peers to support
secure renegotiation.  Existing applications that already cleared
SSL_OP_LEGACY_SERVER_CONNECT will see no behavior change, as
re-clearing the flag is just a little bit of redundant work.
The old behavior is still available by explicitly setting the flag
in the application.

Also remove SSL_OP_LEGACY_SERVER_CONNECT from SSL_OP_ALL, for
similar reasons.

Document the behavior change in CHANGES.md, and update the
SSL_CTX_set_options() and SSL_CONF_cmd manuals to reflect the change
in default behavior.

Todd Short feba11cf2e Handle set_alpn_protos inputs better.
It's possible to set an invalid protocol list that will be sent in a
ClientHello. This validates the inputs to make sure this does not
happen.

Rich Salz cd3f8c1b11 Always check CRYPTO_LOCK_{read,write}_lock
Some functions that lock things are void, so we just return early.

Also make ossl_namemap_empty return 0 on error.  Updated the docs, and added
some code to ossl_namemap_stored() to handle the failure, and updated the
tests to allow for failure.

Matt Caswell ddf8f1ce63 Ensure default supported groups works even with no-ec and no-dh
The default supported groups code was disabled in the event of a build
with no-ec and no-dh. However now that providers can add there own
groups (which might not fit into either of these categories), this is
no longer appropriate.

Matt Caswell 5b64ce89b0 Remove OPENSSL_NO_DH guards from libssl
This removes man unnecessary OPENSSL_NO_DH guards from libssl. Now that
libssl is entirely using the EVP APIs and implementations can be plugged
in via providers it is no longer needed to disable DH at compile time in
libssl. Instead it should detect at runtime whether DH is available from
the loaded providers.

Dr. David von Oheimb 0c3eb2793b TLS client: allow cert verify callback return -1 for SSL_ERROR_WANT_RETRY_VERIFY
The client-side cert verification callback function may not only return
as usual for success or 0 for failure, but also -1,
typically on failure verifying the server certificate.
This makes the handshake suspend and return control to the calling application
with SSL_ERROR_WANT_RETRY_VERIFY.
The app can for instance fetch further certificates or cert status information
needed for the verification.
Calling SSL_connect() again resumes the connection attempt
by retrying the server certificate verification step.
This process may even be repeated if need be.

The core implementation of the feature is in ssl/statem/statem_clnt.c,
splitting tls_process_server_certificate() into a preparation step
that just copies the certificates received from the server to s->session->peer_chain
(rather than having them in a local variable at first) and returns to the state machine,
and a post-processing step in tls_post_process_server_certificate() that can be repeated:
Try verifying the current contents of s->session->peer_chain basically as before,
but give the verification callback function the chance to pause connecting and
make the TLS state machine later call tls_post_process_server_certificate() again.
Otherwise processing continues as usual.

The documentation of the new feature is added to SSL_CTX_set_cert_verify_callback.pod
and SSL_want.pod.

This adds two tests:
* A generic test in test/helpers/handshake.c
  on the usability of the new server cert verification retry feature.
  It is triggered via test/ssl-tests/03-custom_verify.cnf.in (while the bulky auto-
  generated changes to test/ssl-tests/03-custom_verify.cnf can be basically ignored).
* A test in test/sslapitest.c that demonstrates the effectiveness of the approach
  for augmenting the cert chain provided by the server in between SSL_connect() calls.

Thomas De Schampheleire 6d4313f03e replace 'unsigned const char' with 'const unsigned char'
The openssl code base has only a few occurrences of 'unsigned const char'
(15 occurrences), compared to the more common 'const unsigned char' (4420
occurrences).

While the former is not illegal C, mixing the 'const' keyword (a 'type
qualifier') in between 'unsigned' and 'char' (both 'type specifiers') is a
bit odd.

The background for writing this patch is not to be pedantic, but because
the 'opmock' program (used to mock headers for unit tests) does not accept
the 'unsigned const char' construct. While this definitely is a bug in
opmock or one of its dependencies, openssl is the only piece of software we
are using in combination with opmock that has this construct.

Matt Caswell a68eee679a Move some libssl global variables into SSL_CTX
disabled_enc_mask et al were global. Now that cipher loading is done
individually for each SSL_CTX, based on the libctx configured for that
SSL_CTX this means that some things will be disabled for one SSL_CTX but
not for another. The global variables set up the potential for different
SSL_CTXs to trample on each other. We move these variables into the SSL_CTX
structure.

Matt Caswell 301fcb2843 Concentrate deprecated libssl API usage in one file
We create a new file ssl/tls_depr.c to contain functions that need to call
deprecated APIs in libssl. This enables us to remove
OPENSSL_SUPPRESS_DEPRECATED from a number of other libssl files.

The deprecated API usage is either related to ENGINEs and is needed to
continue to support applications that use such ENGINEs. Or they are needed
to support some deprecated public libssl APIs.

One other file remains in libssl that still uses deprecated APIs: s3_cbc.c
This is needed to support the deprecated SSLv3.

Dr. Matthias St. Pierre b425001010 Rename OPENSSL_CTX prefix to OSSL_LIB_CTX
Many of the new types introduced by OpenSSL 3.0 have an OSSL_ prefix,
e.g., OSSL_CALLBACK, OSSL_PARAM, OSSL_ALGORITHM, OSSL_SERIALIZER.

The OPENSSL_CTX type stands out a little by using a different prefix.
For consistency reasons, this type is renamed to OSSL_LIB_CTX.

Matt Caswell 6ac1cd10ba Fix safestack issues in ssl.h
We fix 3 problems with safestack:
- Including an openssl header file without linking against libcrypto
  can cause compilation failures (even if the app does not otherwise need
  to link against libcrypto). See issue #8102
- Recent changes means that applications in no-deprecated builds will need
  to include additional macro calls in the source code for all stacks that
  they need to use - which is an API break. This changes avoids that
  necessity.
- It is not possible to write code using stacks that works in both a
  no-deprecated and a normal build of OpenSSL. See issue #12707.

Fixes #12707
Contains a partial fix for #8102. A similar PR will be needed for hash to
fully fix.

Randall S. Becker 08073700cc NonStop port updates for 3.0.0.
HPE NonStop Port Changes for 3.0.0  Includes unthreaded, PUT, and SPT for OSS.

The port changes include wrapping where necessary for FLOSS and
appropriate configuration changes to support that. Two tests
are excluded as being inappropriate for the platform.

The changes are:
* Added /usr/local/include to nonstop-nsx_spt_floss to load floss.h
* Added SPT Floss variant for NonStop
* Wrapped FLOSS definitions in OPENSSL_TANDEM_FLOSS to allow selective enablement.
* SPT build configuration for NonStop
* Skip tests not relevant for NonStop
* PUT configuration changes required for NonStop platforms
* Configurations/50-nonstop.conf: updates for TNS/X platform.
* FLOSS instrumentation for HPE NonStop TNS/X and TNS/E platforms.

Pauli 7d615e2178 rand_drbg: remove RAND_DRBG.
The RAND_DRBG API did not fit well into the new provider concept as
implemented by EVP_RAND and EVP_RAND_CTX. The main reason is that the
RAND_DRBG API is a mixture of 'front end' and 'back end' API calls
and some of its API calls are rather low-level. This holds in particular
for the callback mechanism (RAND_DRBG_set_callbacks()) and the RAND_DRBG
type changing mechanism (RAND_DRBG_set()).

Adding a compatibility layer to continue supporting the RAND_DRBG API as
a legacy API for a regular deprecation period turned out to come at the
price of complicating the new provider API unnecessarily. Since the
RAND_DRBG API exists only since version 1.1.1, it was decided by the OMC
to drop it entirely.

Other related changes:

Use RNG instead of DRBG in EVP_RAND documentation.  The documentation was
using DRBG in places where it should have been RNG or CSRNG.

Move the RAND_DRBG(7) documentation to EVP_RAND(7).

David Woodhouse c832840e89 Make SSL_set1_host() and SSL_add1_host() take IP addresses
There is a slight mismatch here because X509_VERIFY_PARAM copes only
with a single IP address, and doesn't let it be cleared once it's set.
But this fixes up the major use case, making things easier for users to
get it right.

The sconnect demo now works for Legacy IP literals; for IPv6 it needs to
fix up the way it tries to split the host:port string, which will happen
in a subsequent patch.

Shane Lontis 6725682d77 Add X509 related libctx changes.
- In order to not add many X509_XXXX_with_libctx() functions the libctx and propq may be stored in the X509 object via a call to X509_new_with_libctx().
- Loading via PEM_read_bio_X509() or d2i_X509() should pass in a created cert using X509_new_with_libctx().
- Renamed some XXXX_ex() to XXX_with_libctx() for X509 API's.
- Removed the extra parameters in check_purpose..
- X509_digest() has been modified so that it expects a const EVP_MD object() and then internally it does the fetch when it needs to (via ASN1_item_digest_with_libctx()).
- Added API's that set the libctx when they load such as X509_STORE_new_with_libctx() so that the cert chains can be verified.

Matt Caswell ec27e619e8 Move MAC removal responsibility to the various protocol "enc" functions
For CBC ciphersuites using Mac-then-encrypt we have to be careful about
removing the MAC from the record in constant time. Currently that happens
immediately before MAC verification. Instead we move this responsibility
to the various protocol "enc" functions so that MAC removal is handled at
the same time as padding removal.

Matt Caswell 7cccecc0b6 Don't attempt to duplicate the BIO state in SSL_dup
SSL_dup attempted to duplicate the BIO state if the source SSL had BIOs
configured for it. This did not work.

Firstly the SSL_dup code was passing a BIO ** as the destination
argument for BIO_dup_state. However BIO_dup_state expects a BIO * for that
parameter. Any attempt to use this will either (1) fail silently, (2) crash
or fail in some other strange way.

Secondly many BIOs do not implement the BIO_CTRL_DUP ctrl required to make
this work.

Thirdly, if rbio == wbio in the original SSL object, then an attempt is made
to up-ref the BIO in the new SSL object - even though it hasn't been set
yet and is NULL. This results in a crash.

This appears to have been broken for a very long time with at least some of
the problems described above coming from SSLeay. The simplest approach is
to just remove this capability from the function.

This API requests that the TLS stack generate a (TLS 1.3)
NewSessionTicket message the next time it is safe to do so (i.e., we do

Matt Caswell 7955c1f16e Fix SSL_get_servername() and SNI behaviour
The SNI behaviour for TLSv1.3 and the behaviour of SSL_get_servername()
was not quite right, and not entirely consistent with the RFC.

The TLSv1.3 RFC explicitly says that SNI is negotiated on each handshake
and the server is not required to associate it with the session. This was
not quite reflected in the code so we fix that.

Additionally there were some additional checks around early_data checking
that the SNI between the original session and this session were
consistent. In fact the RFC does not require any such checks, so they are
removed.

Finally the behaviour of SSL_get_servername() was not quite right. The
behaviour was not consistent between resumption and normal handshakes,
and also not quite consistent with historical behaviour. We clarify the
behaviour in various scenarios and also attempt to make it match historical
behaviour as closely as possible.

Matt Caswell ba18627e4a Introduce SSL_CTX_new_with_libex()
We add the ability to specify an OPENSSL_CTX (which may be NULL for the
default context) and a property query string for use during algorithm
fetch operations.

For example, in this way one SSL_CTX could be used the default provider,
and another one could be used with the FIPS provider.

At this stage we don't use these values. That will come later.

John Baldwin 712c094293 Simplify NO_KTLS path in SSL_sendfile.
Avoid tripping over errno values from previous system calls in the
thread and just hardcode the specific error.  BIO_get_ktls_send()
should never be true in the NO_KTLS path, so the #ifdef could be
moved even higher up to assume that error path in the NO_KTLS case
instead.

It was only ever in cert_st because ssl_st was a public structure
and could not be modified without breaking the API.  However, both
structures are now opaque, and thus we can freely change their layout

sigalgs in the SSL object prevents complications wherein they would
inadvertently get cleared during SSL_set_SSL_CTX() (e.g., as run
during a cert_cb).

The previous 2 commits moved supported groups and ciphers out of the
session object to avoid race conditions. We now also move ecpointformats
for consistency. There does not seem to be a race condition with access

Matt Caswell eee2a6a718 Fix a race condition in ciphers handling
Similarly to the previous commit we were storing the peer offered list
of ciphers in the session. In practice there is no need for this
information to be avilable from one resumption to the next since this
list is specific to a particular handshake. Since the session object is
supposed to be immutable we should not be updating it once we have decided
to resume. The solution is to remove the session list out of the session
object.

Matt Caswell 45436e611b Fix a race condition in supported groups handling
In TLSv1.3 the supported groups can be negotiated each time a handshake
occurs, regardless of whether we are resuming or not. We should not store
the supported groups information in the session because session objects
can be shared between multiple threads and we can end up with race
conditions. For most users this won't be seen because, by default, we
use stateless tickets in TLSv1.3 which don't get shared. However if you
use SSL_OP_NO_TICKET (to get stateful tickets in TLSv1.3) then this can
happen.

The answer is to move the supported the supported group information into
the SSL object instead.

Todd Short 555cbb328e Collapse ssl3_state_st (s3) into ssl_st
With the removal of SSLv2, the s3 structure is always allocated, so
there is little point in having it be an allocated pointer. Collapse
the ssl3_state_st structure into ssl_st and fixup any references.

This should be faster than going through an indirection and due to
fewer allocations, but I'm not seeing any significant performance
improvement; it seems to be within the margin of error in timing.

Boris Pismenny 50ec750567 ssl: Linux TLS Tx Offload

If the socket option is successful, then the data-path of the TCP socket
is implemented by the kernel.

Richard Levitte fcd2d5a612 Refactor the computation of API version limits
Previously, the API version limit was indicated with a numeric version
number.  This was "natural" in the pre-3.0.0 because the version was
this simple number.

With 3.0.0, the version is divided into three separate numbers, and
it's only the major number that counts, but we still need to be able
to support pre-3.0.0 version limits.

Therefore, we allow OPENSSL_API_COMPAT to be defined with a pre-3.0.0
style numeric version number or with a simple major number, i.e. can
be defined like this for any application:

    -D OPENSSL_API_COMPAT=0x10100000L
    -D OPENSSL_API_COMPAT=3

Since the pre-3.0.0 numerical version numbers are high, it's easy to
distinguish between a simple major number and a pre-3.0.0 numerical
version number and to thereby support both forms at the same time.

Internally, we define the following macros depending on the value of
OPENSSL_API_COMPAT:

    OPENSSL_API_0_9_8
    OPENSSL_API_1_0_0
    OPENSSL_API_1_1_0
    OPENSSL_API_3

They indicate that functions marked for deprecation in the
corresponding major release shall not be built if defined.

Matt Caswell 9873297900 Separate ca_names handling for client and server
SSL(_CTX)?_set_client_CA_list() was a server side only function in 1.1.0.
If it was called on the client side then it was ignored. In 1.1.1 it now
makes sense to have a CA list defined for both client and server (the
client now sends it the the TLSv1.3 certificate_authorities extension).
Unfortunately some applications were using the same SSL_CTX for both
clients and servers and this resulted in some client ClientHellos being
excessively large due to the number of certificate authorities being sent.

This commit seperates out the CA list updated by
SSL(_CTX)?_set_client_CA_list() and the more generic
SSL(_CTX)?_set0_CA_list(). This means that SSL(_CTX)?_set_client_CA_list()
still has no effect on the client side. If both CA lists are set then
SSL(_CTX)?_set_client_CA_list() takes priority.

Richard Levitte 18958cefd8 Remove SSL_version_str
I was never exported in our shared libraries and no one noticed, and
we don't seem to use it ourselves, so clean it away.

In all likelyhood, this is a remain from the 90's, when it was in
fashion to litter library modules with these kinds of strings.

Benjamin Kaduk 2340ed277b Reset TLS 1.3 ciphers in SSL_CTX_set_ssl_version()
Historically SSL_CTX_set_ssl_version() has reset the cipher list
to the default.  Splitting TLS 1.3 ciphers to be tracked separately
caused a behavior change, in that TLS 1.3 cipher configuration was
preserved across calls to SSL_CTX_set_ssl_version().  To restore commensurate
behavior with the historical behavior, set the ciphersuites to the default as
well as setting the cipher list to the default.

Matt Caswell f01344cb5c Do not reset SNI data in SSL_do_handshake()
PR #3783 introduce coded to reset the server side SNI state in
SSL_do_handshake() to ensure any erroneous config time SNI changes are
cleared. Unfortunately SSL_do_handshake() can be called mid-handshake
multiple times so this is the wrong place to do this and can mean that
any SNI data is cleared later on in the handshake too.

Therefore move the code to a more appropriate place.

Ben Kaduk 328a0547ad Simplify SSL_get_servername() to avoid session references
Ideally, SSL_get_servername() would do exactly as it is documented
and return exactly what the client sent (i.e., what we currently
are stashing in the SSL's ext.hostname), without needing to refer
to an SSL_SESSION object.  For historical reasons, including the
parsed SNI value from the ClientHello originally being stored in the
SSL_SESSION's ext.hostname field, we have had references to the
SSL_SESSION in this function.  We cannot fully excise them due to
the interaction between user-supplied callbacks and TLS 1.2 resumption
flows, where we call all callbacks but the client did not supply an
SNI value.  Existing callbacks expect to receive a valid SNI value
in this case, so we must fake one up from the resumed session in
order to avoid breakage.

Otherwise, greatly simplify the implementation and just return the
value in the SSL, as sent by the client.

Benjamin Kaduk a75be9fd34 Improve backwards compat for SSL_get_servername()
Commit 1c4aa31d79 changed how we process
and store SNI information during the handshake, so that a hostname is
only saved in the SSL_SESSION structure if that SNI value has actually
been negotiated.  SSL_get_servername() was adjusted to match, with a new
conditional being added to handle the case when the handshake processing
is ongoing, and a different location should be consulted for the offered
SNI value.  This was done in an attempt to preserve the historical
behavior of SSL_get_servername(), a function whose behavior only mostly
matches its documentation, and whose documentation is both lacking and
does not necessarily reflect the actual desired behavior for such an
API.  Unfortunately, sweeping changes that would bring more sanity to
this space are not possible until OpenSSL 1.2.0, for ABI compatibility
reasons, so we must attempt to maintain the existing behavior to the
extent possible.

The above-mentioned commit did not take into account the behavior
of SSL_get_servername() during resumption handshakes for TLS 1.2 and
prior, where no SNI negotiation is performed.  In that case we would
not properly parse the incoming SNI and erroneously return NULL as
the servername, when instead the logical session is associated with
the SNI value cached in the SSL_SESSION.  (Note that in some cases an
SNI callback may not need to do anything in a TLS 1.2 or prior resumption
flow, but we are calling the callbacks and did not provide any guidance
that they should no-op if the connection is being resumed, so we must
handle this case in a usable fashion.)  Update our behavior accordingly to
return the session's cached value during the handshake, when resuming.
This fixes the boringssl tests.

Benjamin Kaduk 1c4aa31d79 Normalize SNI hostname handling for SSL and SSL_SESSION
In particular, adhere to the rule that we must not modify any
property of an SSL_SESSION object once it is (or might be) in
a session cache.  Such modifications are thread-unsafe and have
been observed to cause crashes at runtime.

To effect this change, standardize on the property that
SSL_SESSION->ext.hostname is set only when that SNI value
has been negotiated by both parties for use with that session.
For session resumption this is trivially the case, so only new
handshakes are affected.

On the client, the new semantics are that the SSL->ext.hostname is
for storing the value configured by the caller, and this value is
used when constructing the ClientHello.  On the server, SSL->ext.hostname
is used to hold the value received from the client.  Only if the
SNI negotiation is successful will the hostname be stored into the
session object; the server can do this after it sends the ServerHello,
and the client after it has received and processed the ServerHello.

This obviates the need to remove the hostname from the session object
in case of failed negotiation (a change that was introduced in commit
9fb6cb810b in order to allow TLS 1.3
early data when SNI was present in the ClientHello but not the session
being resumed), which was modifying cached sessions in certain cases.
(In TLS 1.3 we always produce a new SSL_SESSION object for new
connections, even in the case of resumption, so no TLS 1.3 handshakes
were affected.)

Matt Caswell 4e8548e80e Introduce the recv_max_early_data setting
Previoulsy we just had max_early_data which controlled both the value of
max early_data that we advertise in tickets *and* the amount of early_data
that we are willing to receive from clients. This doesn't work too well in
the case where we want to reduce a previously advertised max_early_data
value. In that case clients with old, stale tickets may attempt to send us
more early data than we are willing to receive. Instead of rejecting the
early data we abort the connection if that happens.

To avoid this we introduce a new "recv_max_early_data" value. The old
max_early_data becomes the value that is advertised in tickets while
recv_max_early_data is the maximum we will tolerate from clients.

Kurt Roeckx 693cf80c6f Enable SSL_MODE_AUTO_RETRY by default
Because TLS 1.3 sends more non-application data records some clients run
into problems because they don't expect SSL_read() to return and set
SSL_ERROR_WANT_READ after processing it.

This can cause problems for clients that use blocking I/O and use
select() to see if data is available. It can be cleared using
SSL_CTX_clear_mode().

Matt Caswell ee94ec2ef8 Don't cache stateless tickets in TLSv1.3
In TLSv1.2 and below we always cache new sessions by default on the server
side in the internal cache (even when we're using session tickets). This is
in order to support resumption from a session id.

In TLSv1.3 there is no session id. It is only possible to resume using the
ticket. Therefore, in the default case,  there is no point in caching the
session in the internal store.

There is still a reason to call the external cache new session callback
because applications may be using the callbacks just to know about when
sessions are created (and not necessarily implementing a full cache). If
the application also implements the remove session callback then we are
forced to also store it in the internal cache so that we can create
timeout events. Otherwise the external cache could just fill up
indefinitely.

This mostly addresses the issue described in #5628. That issue also proposes
having an option to not create full stateless tickets when using the
internal cache. That aspect hasn't been addressed yet.

Benjamin Kaduk c4fa1f7fc0 Fix regression with session cache use by clients
Commit d316cdcf6d introduced some extra
checks into the session-cache update procedure, intended to prevent
the caching of sessions whose resumption would lead to a handshake
failure, since if the server is authenticating the client, there needs to
be an application-set "session id context" to match up to the authentication
context.  While that change is effective for its stated purpose, there
was also some collatoral damage introduced along with the fix -- clients
that set SSL_VERIFY_PEER are not expected to set an sid_ctx, and so
their usage of session caching was erroneously denied.

Fix the scope of the original commit by limiting it to only acting
when the SSL is a server SSL.

Benjamin Kaduk d316cdcf6d Do not cache sessions with zero sid_ctx_length when SSL_VERIFY_PEER
The sid_ctx is something of a "certificate request context" or a
"session ID context" -- something from the application that gives
extra indication of what sort of thing this session is/was for/from.
Without a sid_ctx, we only know that there is a session that we
issued, but it could have come from a number of things, especially
with an external (shared) session cache.  Accordingly, when resuming,
we will hard-error the handshake when presented with a session with
zero-length sid_ctx and SSL_VERIFY_PEER is set -- we simply have no
information about the peer to verify, so the verification must fail.

In order to prevent these future handshake failures, proactively
decline to add the problematic sessions to the session cache.

Kurt Roeckx 16cfc2c90d Don't use a ssl specific DRBG anymore
Since the public and private DRBG are per thread we don't need one
per ssl object anymore. It could also try to get entropy from a DRBG
that's really from an other thread because the SSL object moved to an
other thread.

Dr. Matthias St. Pierre 6decf9436f Publish the RAND_DRBG API
Fixes #4403

This commit moves the internal header file "internal/rand.h" to
<openssl/rand_drbg.h>, making the RAND_DRBG API public.
The RAND_POOL API remains private, its function prototypes were
moved to "internal/rand_int.h" and converted to lowercase.

Documentation for the new API is work in progress on GitHub #5461.

Matt Caswell f865b08143 Split configuration of TLSv1.3 ciphers from older ciphers
With the current mechanism, old cipher strings that used to work in 1.1.0,
may inadvertently disable all TLSv1.3 ciphersuites causing connections to
fail. This is confusing for users.

In reality TLSv1.3 are quite different to older ciphers. They are much
simpler and there are only a small number of them so, arguably, they don't
need the same level of control that the older ciphers have.

This change splits the configuration of TLSv1.3 ciphers from older ones.
By default the TLSv1.3 ciphers are on, so you cannot inadvertently disable
them through your existing config.

Benjamin Kaduk c39e4048b5 Do not set a nonzero default max_early_data
When early data support was first added, this seemed like a good
idea, as it would allow applications to just add SSL_read_early_data()
calls as needed and have things "Just Work".  However, for applications
that do not use TLS 1.3 early data, there is a negative side effect.
Having a nonzero max_early_data in a SSL_CTX (and thus, SSL objects
derived from it) means that when generating a session ticket,
tls_construct_stoc_early_data() will indicate to the client that
the server supports early data.  This is true, in that the implementation
of TLS 1.3 (i.e., OpenSSL) does support early data, but does not
necessarily indicate that the server application supports early data,
when the default value is nonzero.  In this case a well-intentioned
client would send early data along with its resumption attempt, which
would then be ignored by the server application, a waste of network
bandwidth.

Since, in order to successfully use TLS 1.3 early data, the application
must introduce calls to SSL_read_early_data(), it is not much additional
burden to require that the application also calls
SSL_{CTX_,}set_max_early_data() in order to enable the feature; doing
so closes this scenario where early data packets would be sent on
the wire but ignored.

Update SSL_read_early_data.pod accordingly, and make s_server and
our test programs into applications that are compliant with the new
requirements on applications that use early data.

Dr. Matthias St. Pierre 8164d91d18 DRBG: make the derivation function the default for ctr_drbg
The NIST standard presents two alternative ways for seeding the
CTR DRBG, depending on whether a derivation function is used or not.
In Section 10.2.1 of NIST SP800-90Ar1 the following is assessed:

  The use of the derivation function is optional if either an
  approved RBG or an entropy source provides full entropy output
  when entropy input is requested by the DRBG mechanism.
  Otherwise, the derivation function shall be used.

Since the OpenSSL DRBG supports being reseeded from low entropy random
sources (using RAND_POOL), the use of a derivation function is mandatory.
For that reason we change the default and replace the opt-in flag
RAND_DRBG_FLAG_CTR_USE_DF with an opt-out flag RAND_DRBG_FLAG_CTR_NO_DF.
This change simplifies the RAND_DRBG_new() calls.
